Camping and River Accesses

The Des Moines County Conservation Board offers several camping and river access areas. These areas are as follows:

  1. Welter Recreation Area's are located 1/2 mile east of Augusta on the Skunk River Road. Camping, fishing, and picnicking are favorite activities here.  Sycamore Loop is the main campground.  (previously known as Area #1)

  2. Maple Loop, (previously known as Welter Park) on Skunk River Road, offers camping and access to the Skunk River and is located within the Lower Augusta Skunk River Area

  3. Cottonwood Loop, (previously known as Area #4) 1 mile northwest of Augusta, also offers camping and river access.
        Note:  Old Area's #'s 2, 3, 5 & 6 are no longer in use!

  4. 4th Pumping Plant Recreation Area is located 6 miles north and 5 miles east of Kingston.  Camping, fishing, picnicking, and a boat ramp are all available at this very popular park.

  5. Hawkeye Dolbee Access, 3 miles north and 3 1/2 miles east of Kingston, provides access to the Mississippi for hunting and fishing.

  6. Casey Barrow Access, 12 miles northeast of Burlington, is a popular access for Mississippi River enthusiasts.

  7. Tama Beach, 4 3/4 miles northeast of Burlington, provides easy access to the Mississippi for hunting and fishing.

  8. Edgewater Beach, 4 1/2 miles northeast of Burlington, is particularly popular for anglers and winter eagle watchers.

  9. Sullivan Slough Mississippi River Access, 4 miles south of Burlington, provides excellent access to the river.  It is a great place to watch eagles in the winter and listen for frogs in the summer.

Rates and information for all camping area's in Des Moines County:

$8.00 per night without electrical.

$15.00 with electrical. 

All electric posts in the parks have 110/220 with both 20/30 amp circuit breakers.

AGED/DISABLED:  Camping fees are $5.00 per unit/night for Non Electric.   $10.00 per unit/night for electric.

Definition of:
AGED: Campers 62 years of age or older.

Disabled:  A physical or mental condition of a person that constitutes a substantial disability.  Individuals shall display a State authorized license plate or sign on their rear view mirror of their vehicle.

Welter Recreation Area's:

Sycamore Loop:   There are twenty nine (29) sites total.  (24) sites with electrical hook-ups available. 
  There are five (5) primitive sites without electrical. There are NO water hook-ups available.
   
    Maple    Loop   There are ten (10) primitive sites available for camping.  No Electrical available.
   

    Little Welter Park:

  There are ten (2) primitive sites available for camping.  No Electrical available.

    Cottonwood  There are ten (10) primitive sites available for camping.  No Electrical available.

 Big Hollow Creek:

 
  There are four (4) primitive sites.  No electrical available.  Equestrian trails are available.

 

 
 4th Pumping Plant: There are forty-six (46) sites total.  Twenty-two (22) sites with electrical hook-ups are available. One (1) Handicap site with electrical available.
  There are twenty-two (22) primitive sites throughout the area without electrical capabilities.

                                              CAMPGROUND INFORMATION
 

Water:   There is only one (1) central water supply at Area #1 and at the 4th Pumping Station.  There are no individual hook-ups available.
Showers:   There are NO shower houses or stalls available.
Dump Station:   There is one (1) main dump station at Area #1 and at the 4th Pumping Station.  There are NO individual hook-ups available.  A fee of $5.00 per dump unless    actively camping at our Des Moines County Camp Grounds.
Cabins:   Sorry!  We currently have no Cabins Available at any of our area's.

NOTE: 
Water - Will be turned on April 01 and  Shut Off on  November 01 yearly in the following areas: Big Hollow - Area B, Area E., Shooting Range, Chautauqua & Welter Parks,

Water - Will be turned on April 01 yearly and  Shut Off on December 01 yearly in the remaining areas:  Area 1 & the 4th Pumping Station
