The need for outdoor resources, especially lake and fishing opportunities, was reported in 1995. This study (Iowa Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan) identified shortages in beachfront, hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding trails compared to other regions in the state.

Big Hollow is the answer. Located centrally to Danville, Mediapolis, and Burlington/West Burlington, the site offers great potential. The existing facilities include hunting and fishing, camping, archery and shooting ranges, some trails, silt ponds, a model airplane field, and a working observatory. Nearly $1 million has already been invested.

Recreational opportunities are important to the quality of life in Des Moines County. Nothing will offer the magnitude of opportunities of the proposed Big Hollow Development. No other facility in the tri-state area will have the variety of outdoor experiences that this new park will provide.
